Why is my dog not eating, sluggish, and vomiting yellow fluid?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog has not been eating regular meals. She was acting sluggish. I took her to the hospital I Was told she was fine. Then two nights ago she vomited yellow fluid and in the morning she seemed like she was trying to cough up a hairball. She was licking around her mouth area and sneezing a little . I took her to the hospital and was told they had serious patients they were attending and that my dog seemed to be fine. She has had one meal today and Im concerned.

I'm sorry your dog hasn't been feeling well lately! I get the feeling as well that you feel as if your concerns have been dismissed, and I'm sorry you have those feelings. I understand being worried that she hasn't been eating regular meals, but it is a good sign that she ate at least once today and has kept it down. It could be that she is feeling generally under the weather, and that is causing her decrease in appetite. It may be possible that she has an upset stomach, so I recommend feeding her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. A bland diet should help with GI upset and may help her feel a better bit. If this bland diet doesn't help or she refuses to eat it completely, then I would take her back into the vet for an exam. If you need to bring her back in, explain that it's been a continuing problem, you've tried a bland diet with no success, and you would appreciate having some blood tests and a urinalysis done just to make sure everything is ok. Good luck, and I hope this is helpful!

If the signs persist, more investigations are needed to make sure there isn't any foreign body in the stomach/intestine. A part from that, gastrointestinal inflammation/infections are possible and at symptomatic treatment would be needed. Provisional treatment would consist in gastroprotective medications, anti-emetic (against vomiting) and eventually antibiotics. It is difficult for us to provide a more specific answer without more clinical information. I would suggest to start feeding her with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation (where you can post pictures ) if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.
