Dog's surgery incision red, splotchy, yellow scab. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 8 years old | 8 lbs

Our dog is 3 days post-surgery. She had growths removed from the top of her head and the side of her face. The top of her head is healing nicely but the side of her face is red and splotchy. She has a yellow scab forming above the incision. The area isn't warm to the touch and isn't swollen. Should we be concerned?

You can see some scabbing around an incision as it heals, and there can be some redness as well. It's good that the area on Lola's face isn't warm to the touch and isn't swollen, and I would keep an eye on it for now as long as she is eating and drinking normally, and behaving normally. Should the redness still be present in another 24-48 hours, I would have her seen by a vet just to be safe.
