My pregnant dog is overdue and not in labor. Should I go to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | 2 years old

My pregnant dog is on day 64. Her temperature has been below 100° (98.5-99.5°) for the past 5 days, and she refuses to eat regular dog food. She still hasn't gone into labor and I'm worried. Is she ok? Or should I take her to the vet? The babies are still alive, you can see them moving, but when will she go into labor? Are there any ways I can help her? Thank you :)

I would take Samantha into a vet immediately. Once the dog's temperature drops below 100F, they should deliver puppies within 24 hours. If the dog does not, medical care is needed right away. She may need drugs such as oxytocin to help her give birth, which can only be given by a vet. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

With that temperature drop, I would expect Bella to have her puppies within 24 hours. Keep a close eye on her, offer her puppy food, and have her seen by a vet if 24 hours pass after this temperature drop and she doesn't have her puppies. I hope this helps!

A decreased temperature and restless can be signs of impending labor. I would recommend keeping Lucy in a dark and quiet room and only check on her occasionally. If she has not progressed over a day then you should take her back in for a recheck. Your vet can check the fetal heart best and see if the pups are still alive. Best of luck. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
