What can I use to sedate my semi-feral cat to remove her flea collar?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Birman | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

I have a semi feral cat that my vet put a flea collar on that does not pull off, has to be cut off. It was a 2 hour mauling battle to get her into her carrier to take her to the vet. I don't want to go through that again. I tried putting benedryl into cheese but she must have smelled it as she wouldn't eat it. Since I can't get her to the vet, and can barely handle her (semi-feral), what can I use to make her sleepy enough to get the collar off? Thank you.

You can throw a blanket or large towel over her and grab her that way, wrap her and then cut off the collar with scissors. Best get someone to help you. Your vet can also give you some acepromacine tablets you will need to crush and put in her food, preferably inside, so she cannot run off and hide and fall asleep somewhere else or get attacked by a dog while sedated. There are cat traps that you may be able to borrow from your local animal welfare organisation.
