My dog is coughing, gagging, and snoring. Could it be kennel cough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 21 days old | 70 lbs

He was recently taken to the vet because he had yeast infections in his ears. Two days later, he started having these coughing/gagging spells. He doesn't actually throw up anything. It's not all day, he just has random spells. Also, while he's awake, he sounds like he's snoring. Other than that though, he is completely fine. Still eating and very active. Nothing appears to be bothering him.

Max may have an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough. I suggest you take him back to the vet for a recheck. The vet may want to prescribe an antibiotic and cough medicine. Kennel cough is usually caused by a variety of bacteria and viruses and usually self limiting. The body's immune system will fight it and it may take 4 weeks to go away. However, only a hands-on exam can lead to the diagnosis, so please take Max to your vet.
