My cat's fur is matted and dusty after dog contact. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 20 lbs

My indoor only cat came in contact with a friends dog that had matted clumps of hair and now my cat has the same issue. His fur is clumped up and has a white dusty look to it like he has dandruff. No pain, no problem with the skin underneath that I can see.

Even if you do not see a problem with the skin, it is likely that Bootz picked up a parasite infection or bacterial or fungal infection from the dog. I suggest you take Bootz for an exam to your veterinarian. Some of those infections can be given on to humans, so don't wait too long. Your vet may want to culture a skin swab or do a skin scraping and look at it under the microscope to help with the diagnosis. Treatment is according to the findings and can include specific medicated shampoos, antibiotics, antifungals or an injection/tablets against mites
