My kitten has worms. Am I at risk if she sleeps in my bed with me?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 1lb

My 8 week old kitten has worms and she'll get her first treatment on Saturday. Now, I am extremely terrified of parasites, they make me paranoid. I'm glad my kitten will be getting treatment, but am I also at risk? She jumps on my bed and sleeps with me as I sleeping. I never know when shes up with me and its a surprise. I just want to know the likeliness of me contracting her worms. (Roundworms) I wash my hands after cleaning her box and handling her, but I need to make sure.

There are several parasites that are zoonotic (transmissible to people) that may be afflicting her right now. Therefore to be safe and preventative, I would recommend locking her out of your room until you can get her tested and get a clean bill of health status for your kitty. : ) The likelihood of you actually getting infested with worms is low if you practice good hygiene; however, if you want to be 100% certain, just don't allow her on the bed anymore until you are sure. And for the record, there were only a few cases of people getting infested with Roundworms, so the chances of transmission for that worm is very low. However, there can be other worms or parasites present in her stool that are microscopic so you would not be able to tell they are there until her stool is examined at the vet.
