My dog has bladder stones. What can I do at home to make her comfy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed

I have a 10 yr. old imperial shihtzu. I'm almost certain she has bladder stones, and she even passed one before. We can't get her to the vet at the moment due to finances, and she seems sluggish, is constantly urinating, and refuses to eat normal dog food. I'm really worried since she has lost a lot of weight. She is still urinating, but sometimes she thinks she is and she isn't. Is there anything I can do at home to soothe her until we get to the vet?

Poor Queenie! She really must at a bare minimum be on antibiotics and pain medication. Some types of stones, like struvite stones, can dissolve with the right kind of diet, and surgery can be avoided. However, bladder stones are quite painful and I always start these dogs on two different kinds of pain medications to help this. At home, unless you have medication left over from a previous vet visit, you aren't going to be able to do much to help her--you really must take her in for a specific diagnosis and get a treatment plan started.
