Why is my indoor/outdoor cat suddenly lethargic and walking stiffly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 6 lbs

Hi, my indoor/outdoor cat suddenly became very lethargic about two days ago. He's still eating, drinking, and purring at times but will only get up if he absolutely needs to. He's not as reactive as he used to be and when he walks it's not graceful and fluid, it's almost a heavier, stiffer walk if that makes any sense. Fearing that he might've gotten into something, we gave him a bath yesterday and he seemed to perk up a little but now he's back to being lethargic. There's no signs of injury.

Lethargy can be a sign of many different diseases. I am not sure of his age but he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. He could have an infection, musculoskeletal issue, kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, thyroid issue, etc. Your vet can run some lab-work and take x-rays, if needed, to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, or other medications, depending on the cause. Hope he feels better soon!

The heavier stiffer walk is suggestive of a muscular or neurologic disease process. In an indoor/outdoor cat, I would be concerned about infectious disease especially parasites or feline infectious peritonitis. I would advise you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible.
