My male dog's penis is stuck out and won't retract. What's wrong?

If this is a frequent occurrence, you should speak to your vet about further workup for an underlying cause. Paraphimosis can sometimes be due to neurological disease which impacts the nerves leading to the penile muscles. Alternatively, your vet could perform a small surgical procedure (phallopexy) that may help keep the penis in the sheath.

    This is a condition known as paraphimosis. Typically, I see it in young, unneutered males when they become excited or traumatize the penis. The penis needs to be lubed and replaced in the sheath. This should be performed by your veterinarian.
