Could my cat's bloody stool be from eating cardboard or linoleum?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 years and 2 months old | 20 lbs

For the 2nd time in two weeks my 7 year old male cat showed lots of dark blood in his stools. He has always been healthy, is fed good cat food still has an appetite and does not appear or act sick. I've noticed lately he attempts to eat cardboard and common linoleum floor tile broken pieces some of which can be pretty sharp. My guess would be he ate some and maybe cut his guts a bit? Will such dissolve in a cuts guts?

The fact that Poe is exhibiting Pica, ie eating non-edible things is a very loud warning sign that he is ill. Bleeding from the intestinal tract can be a sign of sharp foreign body trauma, but it can also be a sign of serious intestinal disease. Please take poe to your veterinarian for an exam. You may also want to bring a stool sample. Your vet will need to do blood tests, and likely xrays in order to be able to find his problem.
