My outdoor cat has recurring red sores on her tail. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 11 months and 28 days old | 10 lbs

Hi! I have a cat that has now had two different red, open sores on her tail. The first was on at the base/underside of it and in a week or so that healed. Now a few weeks later, she has a second one that is probably two inches in length at the base of her tail off to the side. She just licks them constantly and is acting normal. Do I need to take her in? She is outside during they day, sleeps in at night. And has been out much more frequently now.

Snowball probably got into a cat fight and those could be bite marks. There may be a bite abscess and I would definitely have this examined by a veterinarian. If it is an abscess, the vet will open it and evacuate the content (pus), flush the abscess cavity and give your kitty prescription antibiotics.
