My diabetic dog with pancreatitis keeps vomiting. How to help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 6 years and 8 months old | 28 lbs

Hello, my dog was diagnosed with pancreatitis and high blood sugar (diabetes) yesterday afternoon. After receiving an initial dose of insulin yesterday, his regular medication began this morning. He was given 6 units of insulin this morning and afternoon as well as pancreatitis pills. He has not eaten much all day and when he does he pukes it up. Is there anything we can do to help him keep the food down and prevent him from vomitting? Could there be blockage in his stomach?

That is very concerning that he is not eating and vomiting and is just starting insulin. The vomiting could be from the pancreatitis but an obstruction is also possible. You should call your vet and give him/her an update. Your vet may want to re-examine your dog and recommend hospitalization to monitor the glucose and control the vomiting. If your dog is lethagic than he should go to the emergency clinic for treatment, if your vet is closed. It is usually not recommended to give insulin if the pet is not eating and vomiting.
