My dog's eye is cloudy and bigger after a scratch. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 5 years and 2 months old | 28 lbs

My dogs eye was scratched a couple months ago when he was playing with a puppy. Its cloudy now but no longer weepy. However it looks to be bigger than his unscratched eye not swollen, but the actual eyeball looks to be bigger. Is this normal? Should I be worried?

Poor Hitch! This sounds like a worry for sure! The scratch might have healed, but the eye itself has been damaged. The cloudiness sounds like cornea edema, which happens when tissue fluid gets trapped in the outer surface of the eyeball. And the fact that the eyeball looks bigger to you, is not a great sign. I would suggest that you have him checked over as soon as possible. If you have an E collar (a "cone"), it would be a great idea for him to wear, to prevent him damaging the eye further. Best of luck!
