Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 3 days old | 5 lbs

I just got my puppy 2 days ago from a rescue shelter he's a 7 week old black lab. He's had diarrhea since I got him but now it's the squirts since I've had him. He's eating normal and playing normal. He feels a little warm not sure if it's normal

There are many things that may cause diarrhea in a puppy Diesel's age. The most common causes will be parasites, viral issues or a change in the diet. I would recommend that his stool be tested for worms and Giardia. Even though he seems to be feeling OK, and a puppy his age I would also recommend to have him tested for Parvovirus. Since his diarrhea is so severe, the doctor will likely recommend a bland diet and potentially an antibiotic as well as a probiotic. A lot of it will just depend on his parasite and parvo status. Make sure that Diesel is drinking plenty of water and you can switch him to chicken breast and white rice (no skin or bones, white meat only) temporarily to help his intestines to calm down.

Congrats on your new puppy, but I'm sorry he has diarrhea! In puppies, diarrhea is commonly caused by intestinal worms. I would give Diesel a deworming treatment, and I recommend Panacur which you can get OTC. He will need another one two weeks after the first course to make sure all the worms are killed. Then he will need one every month until he is six months of age, and after that he should be dewormed once every three months.
