My dog has bloody, loose stools and isn't playful. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Dixie has "gooy" loose bloody stools. She is eating and drinking but not her usual playful self. Not as frequent or as bloody as last night, but still dark red and loose

Hello. Bloody diarrhea is a concern as this means that bacteria can get from the gut into the bloodstream. Also, when dogs are having bloody diarrhea this can lead to severe fluid loss and dehydration. If Dixie is eating/drinking well, and is bright and happy and playing, you can treat her just with chicken (boiled, boneless/skinless) and boiled rice for a couple days, however if she is lethargic, not wanting to eat, and having vomiting and diarrhea you should have her to her vet right away. I hope she feels better soon!

I hate to hear that Lucky is sick. If he has had bloody stool for more than 24hrs, I would recommend to take him into the veterinarian. Bloody stool can be present for many reasons. The doctor will check for parasites and may recommend further diagnostics based on physical exam and history. Lucky will likely get antibiotics and probiotics. I would recommend to feed Lucky chicken and white rice (1 part chicken to 3 part rice) as this will help to decrease inflammation in the intestines. I hope he's feeling better soon!
