This mass could be an injury, , an inflamed mammary gland, or a mammary tumor. Please take Shanty to your veterinarian for an exam. If it is an injury or inflamed mammary gland or an abscess, she will need prescription antibiotics. In case of a tumor, your veterinarian will likely do a fine needle aspirate which he can examine under the microscope. A tumor will need to be removed surgically.

It sounds like Ira may have a cyst, but if she's isn't spayed, there is a possibility she has a mammary tumor. I would have your vet do a fine needle aspirate on it to diagnose what it is. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment with you. A cyst will have to be drained and may need to be removed surgically to prevent reoccurrence. A mammary tumor has a 50% chance of being malignant, and if it is, it will have to be removed surgically.
