My aging cat is declining. When is it time to consider euthanasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Male | neutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 7 lbs

My cat is 12 years old and has a degenerative disc disease. In the past two weeks he has lost the ability to get to the litter box and frequently falls in his own waste. He is no longer acting like himself, and doesn't play or cuddle like he used to. It seems like I am out of treatment options, and I feel like euthanasia is slowly becoming the "right" choice, but I am not sure & feel guilty thinking that as he is still all there upstairs. Do you have any advice or insight for this situation?

Yes, euthanasia is most definitely becoming likely, the main criteria being quality of life in an instinctively clean and independent cat who is becoming unable to exhibit normal behaviors. Acupuncture and physiotherapy may provide some options depending upon the severity of damage
