My cat had stillborn kittens. Why is she carrying toys and meowing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 2 months old | 7 lbs

My cat had her first litter of kittens a few weeks ago & they were all stillborn. Just recently she has started to pick up small items such as cat toys (stuffies) & small kids toys like 5 inch bowling pins. She carries them around the house while meaowing very loudly & drops the item at our feet. Why is she behaving like this?

Hello. I am sorry to hear that Flash lost her kittens. The behaviour that you are describing sounds like it could be related to her hormonal drive to nurse kittens, but she has nothing to nurse because they died. However, the fact that she lost all of her kittens is concerning for an infection present in her uterus or possibly a viral infection or possibly other infectious agents (some of which can be zoonotic- can be spread to humans- and cause abortions). I would suggest having Flash seen by a veterinarian to ensure she doesn't have any signs of infection and also to discuss possibly desexing Flash, to ensure she doesn't get complications in the future with her uterus, and also to eliminate her chance of getting pregnant again. With her history of a complete stillborn litter, I would highly recommend getting her spayed. Good luck with Flash.
