My amputee cat's stump twitches & she's growling. Is she in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 years and 11 months old

My cat lost its front leg a couple years ago and she's had no problems since but I noticed where her leg should be twitches sometimes and there's a chunk of hair missing. I didn't think it was a big deal until today she's been growling at nothing and I thought maybe she's in pain? Should I take her to the vet?

We definitely recognize phantom limb pain in animals, just like they do in the human medical field. Especially since there is some fur missing at the stump, and as Sunny is growling, I suspect that is that is going on. Please take her to your vet for some appropriate pain relievers. Also acupuncture may help with this condition, so ask your vet for the names of some veterinary acupuncturists in your area.
