How can you tell if a spay incision site is infected. My cat is still eating and drinking normally but the incision site looks red and she seems to be in pain it's been 4 days since she was spayed

Redness, swelling, discharge and pain/discomfort are the signs compatible with a possible infection inflammation of the incision site. A moderate amount of inflammation has to be expected and is normal after surgery (that could be her case then). A picture would help to provide a more specific answer. Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation (where you can post pictures ) if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! No, it doesn't lool infected based on your pictures. It is normal for some skin reddness or bruising to develop a few days later. I would be sure that Daisy is wearing and E-collar to prevent licking and you are trying your best to prevent jumping and running. I hope this helps and I wish Daisy a speedy recovery!

I think it looks pretty good actually. It does not appear infected. Cats do get a lot of suture reactions to the stitches under the skin (inflammation) so this may be what is going on. Just keep monitoring it and keep the E-collar on. If you have any other questions you are welcome to post again. Thank you for posting the photos!

I'm sorry a picture did not get posted. Mild redness and swelling is to be expected 4 days after surgery. If there is any drainage or a significant amount of swelling or redness then that may indicated infection. Make sure you are using an e-collar to prevent licking. I recommend giving your veterinarian a call to see if they can take a look for you. Better to be safe than sorry in these situations! You can try posting again with a picture or even put a picture in the images section for Minou's profile. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope Minou heals quickly!
