Why does my cat pause when peeing? Is it a urinary health concern?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 16 lbs

Is pausing in urinating normal? My cat urinates A LOT. I can hear him sometimes if I am nearby the litter box. It starts off steady but then seems to pause briefly until he is finished. He doesn't seem to be straining or in pain.

No this would not be completely normal and may be an indication of urinary tract inflammation. Increasing water/fluid intake by feeding a wet food is very helpful and ensure any dry food is formulated to reduce crystals and urinary issues such as a specialist neutered cat or urinary formula. Monitor closely for any pain, discomfort, increased frequency or blood which would need veterinary treatment. Severe cases can end up with complete obstruction so prevention is best
