My cat suddenly has a wet cough. What are the possible reasons?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 14 lbs

Sweet Pea-- 6 yr old (Bengal--mostly alley cat mix) suddenly has a cough. 3 more cats in our house/yard with no cough. Sweet Pea is indoors/outdoors. Never any ticks on cats, nor any neighbors dogs. In Fresno CA we have mosquitoes, but they need 60 degree temps overnight to breed. Our nights have been below 50. Tried to give some water and apple juice to Sweet Pea by dropper, he resists; but licks spilled drops from floor. The fluids quickly bring a coughing spell. It has a 'wet' sound.

Coughing is a very vague symptom that can be part of a number of illnesses. Heartworm (if not tested/on a preventive), respiratory disease, herpesvirus, upper respiratory infections, foreign bodies in the throat or nasal passageways, lung and heart issues can all produce a persistent or wet cough. It is best to schedule a veterinary exam ASAP to help find the underlying cause to Sweet Pea's symptoms, especially if he is refusing to eat or drink.
