My dog is vomiting all day. When should I take him to the ER?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | West Highland White Terrier | Male | neutered | 9 years and 9 months old | 22 lbs

My 9 year old Westie has been vomiting all day. I'm worried. Should I take him to ER? He ate his dinner ok. He actually cleaned the bowl and about an hour later was vomiting but he hasn't stopped. He was vomiting prior to his dinner, but stopped so I thought he was ok to be fed.

IF he is bright and alert and willing to drink it should be ok to monitor him until your vets office is open; keep fasting for 24hours and reintroduce bland, low fat food. If he becomes weak or dizzy, persistently vomiting on empty stomach or will not drink fluids you should take him to the emergency clinic
