My cat has bad breath & jaw pain. Can I clean his teeth at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 9 months old | 6.9 lbs

Can I clean my cat's teeth with gauze and one tea spoon salt in a cup of water (or normal saline).. to relieve the gingivitis..or only water? He has bad breath and pain in his jaw.. but can't go to visit a vet Or should I give him antibiotics? Thank you! :-)

If he he has pain he should be seen by a vet to rule out damaged teeth or a broken jaw which requires repair or extraction - brushing will not solve this. I would also recommend using a pet toothpaste or dental hygiene gel as these are more effective and also better accepted as they are flavoured.
