Bloody diarrhea of 4 days duration requires a trip to a veterinarian. The dewormer may not have targeted the correct parasites or something else, like an infection, is causing the diarrhea. Don't forget to take a stool sample with you to your appointment to make sure that the dewormer has done its job.

Diarrhea can be common after deworming but should be self-limiting. If this has been going on for more than a day then I would recommend calling your veterinarian. Your dog will likely need some antibiotics to help get over the diarrhea. A bland diet can also be helpful S well (like plain boiled chicken and rice). I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.

There are a couple of reasons a puppy can have bloody stool. You mentioned they dewormed at the shelter, but didn't say what medication they used. There are a couple of different kinds of parasites puppies can get. She could have worms, coccidia and/or giardia. These different types of parasites require different kinds of treatment so it's possible she has another type of parasite and hasn't been treated for it yet. Other common causes would be parvovirus as well as stress colitis from being in the shelter. Less common causes would be organ dysfunction such as liver, intestinal or pancreas issues. It would be a really good idea for you to take your puppy in to see the vet since she is having that many episodes of diarrhea per day. In a puppy that can cause them to get dehydrated quickly. As long as she is still eating well, not vomiting and has good energy the vet will probably want to check a stool sample to look for all the parasites and treat her for them if she has some. They may also want to put her on some medications to help with the diarrhea. But if she is showing any other symptoms it could be more serious and require additional testing. If it was just simply the worms she was treated for she should be better by now so I really think there is something else going on and it's worth taking her in to have her checked out.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Bloody diarrhea in puppies is commonly caused by intestinal parasites and viral infections. Not all dewormers kill all parasites, so it is possible that Annabelle has parasites even after being dewormed. I recommend having her seen by her vet as soon as possible to determine exactly what is going on. You can bring a decal sample in a disposable container to help rule out parasites. I hope this helps!
