My dog's penis looks torn and he's licking it. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

It looks like the hole on top of Buddy's penis is torn and he's licking it-I can't tell if there is discharge and it's a little pink-

Buddy may have injured himself. I recommend getting him seen by a vet as soon as possible for an exam. Don't let him lick it excessively and do more damage to himself, if necessary, get an inflatable e-collar from PetsMart to keep him from being able to reach to lick himself.

This will need to be examined by your veterinarian. Unfortunately if the urethral opening is damaged, then there is a possibility that it can heal with a stricture which will hinder proper urination, or there is also a possibility or permanent damage. Please have Buddy examined by a veterinarian right away.

It sounds like Buddy may have injured his penis or prepuce (the skin covering the penis) - this can happen if he accidentally gets caught on something, such as a sharp branch or part of a fence. I would recommend having him examined by a vet as soon as you are able to - he/she can check the penis itself as well as the sheath to see where the injury is and how severe it looks. In most cases, minor injuries to this area will heal just fine with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication but if the wound is more severe, it could require surgery to reposition things correctly. He will also need an e-collar (a plastic lampshade-type cone) to prevent licking since the more he licks this area the more sore and irritated it will become.
