Urinating outside the litter box is a very common behavior problem reported to vets. Inappropriate urination can be a way of your cat letting you know they aren't well. It can signal a urinary tract infection, kidney disease, diabetes, or hyperthyroidism, among other things. The first step to treating this is to take your cat to the vet for a health check. Your vet will do a urinalysis to see if there is blood or bacteria in the urine (signaling a UTI), or glucose in the urine which can suggest diabetes. Your vet will also do routine lab tests such as a biochemistry to check organ functions. Once a medical problem is ruled out as the cause of the inappropriate urination, your vet can discuss behavioral methods with you to help stop this behavior.

If your vet did not do a full work-up with blood-work and a urinalysis than I recommend that one is done. She could have a urinary tract infection or a disease that causes cats to urinate more (kidney disease, diabetes, etc.). If your vet did a full work up than you could try Feliway spray or diffuser and see if that helps. Your vet could also prescribe an anti-anxiety medication, like Prozac to see if that helps. Prozac does seem to help a lot of cats that inappropriately urinate. http://www.feliway.com/us/#redirected

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. This certainly could be behavioral as there are no symptoms you are describing that indicate a urinary problem. I would recommend placing multiple litter boxes throughout the house and trying pheremone therapy with a product called Feliway (collar and spray). I would start with this and see if these help with the problem. If not, then I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him and discuss other options for treatment. I hope this helps!

Inappropriate urination can be a sign of lower urinary tract disease like a UTI or even kidney disease. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian so they can rule out a medical problem causing this behavior. The inappropriate defection could be linked. If a medical problem is ruled out you can discuss environmental changes that could help with behavior.
