Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog got her shots 2 days ago. She won't eat only drink water. She has diarrhea and shes vomiting. Could this be because of the shots given?

Yes this could be a side effect to the vaccination, but it could also be unrelated. Take your dog off food for about 12 hrs, then feed bland food such as boiled rice with boiled white chicken meat in small quantities over several feeds a day,. Do this for a day, then start replacing small quantities of the rice with his normal food over the next two days until he is at the normal quantity of his regular food. At the same time you can offer him some black tea with glucose (10 tsp of Glucose and 1 tsp of salt (NOT Diet Salt!!) per quart of tea to drink. If the diarrhea does not go away by the end of the third day or if your dog deteriorates, you will need to take your dog to a veterinarian for an exam.

More history would be required as to what shots she was given and why before it could be possible to advise any further here. I strongly recommend you contact the clinic to discuss her condition as she has not improved and especially if she has worsened

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Possible side effects after vaccines include pain at the injection site, lethargy, inappetence, vomiting and sometimes diarrhea and general discomfort. This should subside within 1-2 days. If it does not improve or it worsens or Luke continues to vomit or his stools develop into watery diarrhea, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Otherwise, Luke will likely start feeling better shortly. Good luck and best wishes!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Shaka! It sounds as though he is having a vaccine reaction. Read the link below regarding Benadryl. I would feed him a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice, about 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. If he is no longer vomiting and the diarrhea isn't severe (having accidents) then you can just start the bland diet and not fast him. Hopefully he will find it more appetizing than his dog food. If he isn't significantly better by Monday I would have him rechecked by your Vet. He may need some oral medications. https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl/ I wish Shaka a speedy recovery!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Possible side effects after vaccines include pain at the injection site, lethargy, gastrointestinal symptoms, inappetence and general discomfort. This should have resolved already. For this reason, I recommend you have Logan evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and best wishes!
