Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog drinks water then throws up his food, twice in 2 days. Still eating and drinking at other times.

there is a chance that it's just him eating too fast then drinking too much, otherwise it could be an upset stomach (usually an infection or indigestion) or something stuck in his stomach (a toy or other foreign body). If it carries on put him on boiled boneless chicken and rice for a couple days, then if it still persists take him to the vet to receive adequate treatment.

Some dogs may experience [vomiting](https://www.petcoach.co/article/vomiting-in-dogs) in certain circumstances. After fast-paced activity or on an empty stomach are key times for dogs to vomit back up any food or water they quickly eat or drink. It is possible that your dog is vomiting after high activity or on an empty stomach, which can make symptoms worse. Very cold water can also cause vomiting if taken in quickly. It is best to let your dog rest a bit after intense exercise, then to offer small amounts (cupfuls) of water at a time. Making sure he keeps it down before offering more. Feeding a small treat while providing [water](https://www.petcoach.co/article/does-my-pet-need-to-drink-more-water/) may also help by giving his stomach something to digest in addition to the water. Crunchy dog treats or even a snack of plain boiled chicken may be enough to settle his stomach before drinking. If the vomiting continues, worsens or if your dog is unable to keep any water at all down, it is best to schedule an appointment with your local veterinarian. Inability to keep any water down can lead to [dehydration](https://www.petcoach.co/article/assessing-dehydration-through-skin-elasticity-in-dogs-cats/), a serious condition. Your vet can help prevent dehydration by providing IV or subcutaneous (under the skin) fluids as needed until the cause of vomiting is found.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Ella! If Ella is unable to hold food down then she should be seen by a Vet. I recommend fasting her-no food or water. If there is no vomiting in 6 hours you can offer her ice chips but no food. In the morning if she hasn't vomited then start feeding her a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice and water as "sip and nibble." Small amounts of water and food. Feed about 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. If she vomits while fasted or after you offer food she needs to go to the Vet tomorrow. Causes of vomiting: foreign body (something is stuck in her stomach or intestines), intestinal parasites, toxin ingestion, pancreatitis, or viral and bacterial infections. I hope this helps and I wish Ella the best!

It could be Charlie is drinking water too quickly causing him to vomit. Try giving him smaller amounts of water at a time to see if that helps. If it does now, have him seen by a vet. Best of luck.
