Mucus in Dog Poop

Usually, you need not worry about seeing a small amount of mucus in your pet's stool. Dog stool normally contains some mucus -- a slime-like substance made by the intestines to keep the lining of the colon lubricated and moist. But if you notice an excessive amount of mucus in the stool, or if it is accompanied with blood or a radical change in your dog's bowel movements, seek immediate veterinary medical attention. He or she will be better able to identify the underlying cause and recommend a proper course of treatment. Common causes include: Stress Dietary indiscretion Intestinal parasites (e.g., giardia) Bacterial overgrowth (e.g., Salmonella) Tumors and/or polyps (e.g., rectoanal polyps) Inflammation of the colon or rectum Narrowing of the rectal opening Constipation and other conditions which may it more difficult to defecate.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Mucus isn’t normal. I suspect it may be from your diet. Protein, grain, and vegetables are not the only important ingredients in dog food. They also need added vitamins, minerals, and bone meal. Human food alone is not sufficient for dogs. If you note the mucus with loose stool, straining, or blood I would take Ozzy to a vet for further diagnostics, like a microscopic stool check. Good luck and kisses to Ozzy!

This means that something in the colon or rectum maybe irritating the lining and the mucus-producing cells start producing more mucus (to lubricate the gut) than necessary. Parasites such as whipworms, tapeworms, and other intestinal parasites can also cause mucus in the stool. It may be a good idea to take a fresh stool sample to your vet for a fecal test.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Mucus in the stool is commonly seen with colitis which is what the metronidazole is for. I think that this is ok for now as his diarrhea is likely improving after starting the medications. Good luck and have a great day!

If he is otherwise doing fine, I would just continue to monitor him for now. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Mucous in the stool indicates inflammation with in the colon. It can be from many reasons: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infection, she ate something gross outside, food allergy intolerance, or a reaction to a new food/treat or people food. One stool episode with mucous may be a one time thing. If it continues or she develops diarrhea bring a stool sample to your Vet and start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. If that doesn't help then she should see your Vet for an exam and medications. I wish Grave the best!

Blood in the stool can be caused by problems with the colon (lower bowel), rectum, or perianal structures like the anal sacs. Mucus on the stool usually suggests some inflammation of the colon. There could be underlaying inflammation due to stress (change in diet, changes in household, etc), infection, a perineal hernia (more common in intact male dogs), or possibly a mass (hopefully not because your kid is young). The best next step is to have your vet perform a rectal exam to assess the rectum and anal sacs. If this is normal that will help to rule out some common issues and make you feel better. If there is no improvement or there is more mucous, I would recommend initiating a bland diet as outlined below. If there is still no improvement on the bland diet, you can add in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora, which can be found online quite easily. This can have a variety of causes such as a parasitic, bacterial, or viral infection. Sometimes certain infections can cause the stool to have a pungent odor. Food sensitivities can also play a role as well.
