My dog has a puncture wound. What's the best care: shave, salve, or surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 7 years and 6 months old | 62 lbs

My dog started shaking and I noticed she kept licking a spot on her side. She has licked it a lot and now I can see a puncture wound. I took her to the vet, but they didnt notice it. They just thought she had some sore muscles. I called back and they are to call in antibiotics. Shouldn't she have surgery to put in a splint? Also, is it safe to put on dog salve for wounds? I have attached a pic. I am worried. Should I shave the area?

Typically puncture wounds are not closed surgically. Splints are only put on legs and they would only splint a leg if it was broken. Yes, you can clip/shave that hair from around the wound. I would need to know the name of the product you are using - I cannot enlarge or read the ingredients. The best product to use on this type of wound is Vetericyn. https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/vetericyn-plus-wound-and-skin-care-for-dogs You will also need to keep her from licking that spot until it is healed so it is best to get her a cone to wear. https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/well-and-good-e-collar Start the antibiotics as soon as you can get them.
