My cat keeps licking ringworm cream on her whiskers. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Female | spayed | 10 months and 9 days old

Hello, my cat has Ringworms on her whiskers area, I've been advised to apply Betadine to sanitize the area then apply "Lamisil" .. an antifungal medication however, she keeps licking it every time I apply it.. since the area is so close to her tongue she can reach it easily. i made her wear a cone so she doesn't use her paws to clean it.. but how can i prevent her from licking the whiskers area? is that behavior harmful? or slows the healing process? what is the alternative thank you!

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You should rub Lamisil into the skin as soon as you apply it. Creams get absorbed rapidly into the skin and rubbing it in will enhance absorption even more. Lamisil is not toxic when ingested but it may produce upset stomach, so your Batty may vomit if she keeps licking it. Licking the cream off may slow down the healing. If after 10-14 days there is no improvement to the skin, your vet may have to change the treatment to anti-fungal tablets.
