My cat keeps licking an open wound on his paw. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | 2 years and 10 months old

I have just found this wound above my cats paw and I had only noticed it since he kept licking the wound. The wound looks quite open. Do you know how this could of happened and is there anything I can do to help him. He doesn’t seem to be in pain.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The first thing you need to do, is to stop Milo from licking the wound. Head collar will be best. Then you should clean the wound with warm, boiled water 2-3 times a day. However, if the would is swollen and thickened (it does look a bit like that on the photos), your Milo may need to be seen at your local vets to get a course of antibiotics. It is hard to say what happened, it could have been a piece of glass, barbed wire, metal sheet that cut the skin.
