My dog had mastitis. How do I prevent future recurrence?

Pet's info: Dog | Japanese Akita Inu | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 3 months old | 60 lbs

My dog has experienced mastitis, i know that she will be more susceptible for mastitis in the future , how can i prevent for recurrence mastitis in the future? What about give antibiotics before she mate? Thanks

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. To prevent mastitis you need to keep all the tits clean. You will have to wipe them with baby wipes (with no fragrance) at least twice a day. Also, make sure that Kaya's bed is washed regularly. You have to pay attention that the puppies feed from all the nipples. If you see that one of the nipples is engorged, you should manually express milk. Giving prophylactic antibiotics is not a good idea - it may harm the puppies and the mum too.
