Why is my calm cat suddenly aggressive to loud noises and attacking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered

My cat gets nervous and aggressive when hearing loud voices,he is a very calm cat and never does something like this. This is a new behaviour as he used to run away and hide on hearing loud voices, but yesterday he attacked my friend who has laughed out loud,he kept chasing her and wanted to bite her but she locked herself in a room. After this he returned to normal and was calm. What does this new behaviour mean? And is this behaviour a dangerous indication?

A sudden change in behavior may have, at its root, injury or infection. Ideally, Rostom should be physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose and treat any medical causes for his sudden aggression. Neutering him should be strongly considered as testosterone can be a driving force behind aggressive behaviors. Once medical causes have been ruled out, you can address behavioral concerns such as stress or anxiety. A pheromone product, such as Feliway Spray or plug in diffusers, may help decrease any aggression or anxiety. A gradual desensitization to loud noises can also be done to lessen Rostom's response to them.
