Why is my dog licking her private parts and crying after a new shampoo?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 9 months old | 14 lbs

My dog is aggressively licking her private parts and whining while doing so. She also cries and yelps while doing this. She’s not on her heat, not stressed, and she doesn’t have any problems urinating. Other than doing that around two times a day, she plays like normal, urinates like normal, and behaves like she always does. It seems that part is itching. We used a new shampoo, and I’m wondering if that has something to do with this. It’s been going on for 4 days.

Some dogs do have allergies that can make them focus on the vulva and sometimes they can even end up with an infection around the vulva. You could use a warm washcloth to wipe daily to see if it will help. If she’s not improving in a few days or if you start to notice urinary issues I’d recommend having your vet examine her.
