What activities are safe for my dog after a neck slipped disc?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 9 years and 11 months old | 11 lbs

My dog had a suspected slipped disc in her neck 8 weeks ago which caused her an extreme amount of pain. A couple weeks afterwards she started acting like her normal self again. Now shes wanting to play tug of war everyday haha and its hard keeping her still. Shes always jumping around being the happy little dog she always was prior to the injury. The vet said its extremely easy for them to reinjure it, so I was just wondering what she is allowed to do now? What will reinjure it? What to avoid?

Playing with her toys in a general sense is fine. Tug-o-war - not a good idea. Playing frisbee or throwing a ball for her to chase - also not good. Going on walks and gentle hikes is fine. Short runs are OK too. You just don't want her to do a lot of jumping/twisting motions. Hope this clarifies. If you have more questions please feel free to post again!
