My dog has tremors from heartworm meds. Can I stop cold turkey?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Female | 2 years and 5 months old | 35 lbs

My dog was prescribed Tri-Heart chews to keep her safe from getting heartworm. Her first dosage was March 25th and she started having idiopathic head tremors on March 29th. We have read that a side effect of this medicine can be tremors, convulsions, and other neurological issues. Can we stop giving her the heartworm prevention chews? Is it safe to stop them cold turkey?

You can stop them cold turkey and see if she improves. Otherwise, it may be a good idea to see a neurologist. If you live in an area that is high risk for heartworm you may want to consider an alternative form of protection, like topical formulas.
