My dog is tired after prednisone and doxycycline. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | spayed | 7 months and 4 days old | 5 lbs

I took my dog to the vet and she had tonsillitis. She was prescribed prednisone and doxycycline. She’s been taking both for 4 days now and doesn’t seem to be herself (lack of energy.) She is still eating, drinking, and loves to go on her walks but inside the house she doesn’t seem as active and just lays around. Is lack of energy a side effect of any of these meds?

Hello. No, these medications generally do not cause a lack of energy. I wonder if she just knows she needs to rest to get over her infection. As long as she seems to be healing, keep her on her medications & perhaps discuss this with your veterinarian on Monday. I hope Chicken Noodle ( great name ) is feeling better soon & thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
