Unvaccinated dog attacked: Rabies risk? Will she be put down?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 45 lbs

Hi! I recently got a dog who is 2 years old. She has never had any vaccines or shots that I’m aware of. A few days ago I was walking her and she got attacked by the neighbors dog. What should I worry about in terms of rabies? I don’t think she’s ever been to the vet. Should I worry that they’re going to make me put her down?

I'm so sorry to hear this happened to Molly. Thankfully I think it is very unlikely that she will contract rabies from your neighbour's dog. It is unlikely that a pet dog who has been vaccinated will have the rabies virus and therefore wont be able to spread it. Regardless of this I would be concerned Molly may have been hurt by the dog, check her carefully for wounds. If she seems dull or sick I would take her to the vet. When possible I would highly recommend having a general health exam for her, and having her vaccinated.
