Why is my cat no longer cuddly or playful? Is he sick or unhappy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 2 years and 3 months old | 5 lbs

My cat has grown up with me and I take amazing care of him and have always been the one keeping his litter box clean and feeding him. For some reason he stopped sleeping with me and isn’t cuddly anymore- actually if I try to cuddle him he gets up and moves. He doesn’t play with toys either anymore or pur, he always just wants to go outside but I don’t want that. Any tips on getting him to become more affectionate again?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Bean. I'm wondering if he's neutered or not. If he's not neutered, it may be that he is more interested in going outside to find females with which to mate. In that case, have him neutered. If he's neutered, it could also be that he's sick. I'd have him seen by a vet for a health check in this case. I hope this helps!
