My dog leaves wet spots when lying down. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 30 lbs

Twice in the last week or so my dog has left small wet spots (not the size of a full pee) where she was laying down. I haven’t noticed any other changes in her urination, and when it happened tonight I noticed the wet spot and took her outside and she had a long pee. She also gave birth to puppies around November I think (before I adopted her). What could this be? Could it be left over damage from giving birth? Is a vet visit required or should I wait to see if it happens again? Thank you.

Hello and than you for reaching out about Ellie. This could be a one off accident but it may be related to bladder infection. Urine incontinence after giving birth is very uncommon in dogs. We see sometimes urine incontinence after neutering, but this is related to drop in hormones level resulting in weak urethral sphincter. Please, monitor Ellie at home for the next 24-48hrs. If she has more accidents, you should take her to your local vets. Please, take a urine sample with you, if possible, - it would be the best initial diagnostic test for Ellie.
