My older spayed dog's nipple is leaking clear fluid. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | spayed | 22 lbs

Why is one of my dog’s nipples constantly leaking? Background: ~10yrs old. She had a hysterectomy and a mastectomy in December of 2019 due to mammory tumors that were supposedly benign. We never noticed it leaking before and now it is constant. The discharge is clear (seems to turn yellow when it dries on the fur) and does not smell. It does not seem to bother her. The fur around it gets stiff and is difficult to wash out.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. So sorry to hear that Panda is having this issue. I would be extremely concerned about this discharge in only one teat and she was just recently spayed at her age. I suggest you take her back to the vet for an exam. This may be recurrence of a tumor or there is some hormonal imbalance. This discharge is never normal in a spayed dog.
