Puppy had parvo. Can I safely adopt her without a parvo-free test?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Black Mouth Cur | Female | spayed | 22 lbs

We are currently looking at a dog to adopt from a rescue. She is a puppy (4 months old) and have been told that she previously has had parvo. However, she has no documentation of the dog being parvo-free now. But she has shown me vet records of her getting vaccines starting about 5 weeks ago to now. Should I not get this puppy?

Hi there. If the puppy previously had parvo and is now recovered, she should be fine - there is really no need to "prove" she's now negative, as it's not a chronic disease. Once the clinical signs have resolved and the dog is acting normal again, they've recovered and can go on with normal life. They will also be immune to parvo going forward, much like human kids with chicken pox. :)
