How to tell if my senior dog with neurological issues is suffering?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 20 lbs

Dying still eats hydrates alert to my presence takes brief walks urinates/defecates on own. Still question her quality of life: Mostly spoon/hand feed be4 she eats on her own She walks unsteadily her backside falls drunk looking, the meds gabpentin&zonegram are factors. Paces aimlessly for brief periods. Spasms asleep/laying down like she is fighting seizure. Often turns head right makes bite motion in the air. She is clingy I don't know what hospice vs suffering looks like? Thank you

Poor Roxy. It sounds like she has a serious illness or neurological condition. It is for you to determine if you feel she has a decent quality of life. I have attached a quality of life assessment tool for you to go through. I would have this conversation with your vet as well. They will help determine if it is time. https://journeyspet.com/pet-quality-of-life-scale-calculator/
