My dog's abscess drain is warm and hard. Is this normal healing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog got a drain for her abscess 2 days ago and it’s hard and slightly warm to the touch. She’s acting normal and like herself but I am unsure if this is a part of the normal healing process or not.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It can be normal for a healing abscess to feel warm to the touch due to inflamation. I recommend contacting the vet that treated her to see if they would like to recheck her or if it may be time to remove the drain. I hope this helps.

The images don't show anything too alarming. Some swelling is to be expected. You can use a warm compress to promote drainage. The warmth may also provide some relief. Monitor for fever or loss of appetite. Continue to treat as directed by your veterinarian. Any time you are concerned, a recheck is definitely recommended.
