Pet's info: Dog | American Foxhound | Female | spayed | 8 years and 10 months old | 62 lbs
Hi, my dog had developed numerous lesions on her scalp. They have not appeared to heal or change in the past two weeks other than forming black scabs. They seem to be itchy to her and bleed a bit if she scratches them but otherwise don’t seem to bother her. I trimmed the fur in the affected areas to both get a better view of them and in thinking they may be ‘hot-spots’ that may heal better that way. Any idea what they may be or how to best treat them? Thank you!

Hello, Yes, the lesions could be hot spots. You need to remove the scabs and clean the skin twice daily with antiseptic solution (ideally containing chlorhexidine, for example Hibiclens). Also, you need to stop Stella from scratching and biting the lesions. A head cone is usually the best in such situations. If after a few days of treatment (4-5 days) you don't see any improvement, you will need to take Stella to your local vets to get the treatment in form of oral antibiotics and/or anti-inflammatory medications.

The area in question is difficult to see in the image provided. The sore could be an infection (bacterial, fungal or parasites), trauma or an ulcerated mass. Stella would need to be physically examined by your veterinarian to positively identify the underlying cause. In the meantime, place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent rubbing, pawing or scratching. You can use a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution to clean the area daily. If there are no signs of improvement within a few days, then have her seen by your veterinarian.
