My cat's black fur spot is growing. Should I take her to the vet?

Hi, my cat has a spot of black fur on her back but is getting bigger. Do you think it can be serious? Thanks so much. Lola

It could be a normal color of her fur, but it could signal another problem. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain. I'd have her checked out by a vet for this problem. I hope this helps, Lola!

Hi, I can see the dark pigmented mass on the photo and I would be more cautious then to say in certainty what any mass is by simply looking at it. If it hasn't been done yet I suggest to go to your vet and consider trying to take a sample. This usually means collecting samples of the material inside the mass with a needle (fine needle aspiration=FNA). Taking a sample and analyzing at it under the microscope or sending it to a pathologist for identification is crucial in most cases for a definitive diagnosis. If FNA is not effective (or if your vet thinks it's not the best option) the next recommendation is usually a biopsy.

Hi, this random spot popped up on top of my cats butt area. I tried to gently wipe it with a warm rag and it’s still there. Should I be concerned? It’s like a dark blue/black color. My cat has been walking around fine and still active
Some discoloration/skin changes can be normal with age, however if the area is rapidly changing color, the spot loses hair, is painful, or you notice signs of cuts or infection (open wounds, oozing debris, pain to the touch, etc) it is best to have your vet take a look to rule out issues such as an infection or injury to the area. I would keep an eye on the spot to monitor for any changes, and keep Sweetie from licking or chewing at it with the use of an Elizabethan (cone) collar as needed, as well as keep the area clean and dry. If the spot doesn't improve or worsens, a vet visit is best.

Hi, I currently have a calico cat who's red fur is getting black spots in it. I was wondering why that would happen? Could it be her winger coat maybe?

This could potentially be just a color change in the hair coat due to the change in season like you said yourself (winter coat). Some animals do develop color changes as they age as well. As long as she is acting normally and there are no changes to the skin, this is likely a normal change. If you are concerned at all, I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.

If it is not associated with itchiness or discomfort, there is no need to be concerned about this. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Found this on 8 1/2 year old cat
I would get this checked out by a vet. I worry about these dark-colored masses being melanoma, which can be a serious cancer if not controlled soon enough. It's also possible that this is a benign skin tumor or cyst, but there's no way to tell for sure from looking at it. A sample will need to be analyzed under a microscope in order to tell what type of mass it is. I hope that helps and all is well with the cat.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco. While this may be normal pigmentation cats can develop tumors in the eye. I would recommend getting a second opinion from a veterinary ophthalmologist, especially if it is changing/growing.

I have found this blue spot on my cat I'm unsure what it is
It is difficult to say for sure from the picture as there is some discoloration artifacts on the photo. If the spot is not raised and is flat, it is likely a spot of increased color (hyperpigmentation). It could be the start of a melanoma so it would be wise to keep a close eye on this. If you would like a definitive answer, I would have your veterinarian take a look at Bella so that the most appropriate recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! My cat has a bald spot on his neck that has some black dots in it, what do I do?
Thank you for the pictures, they are very helpful. I see what you mean about the bald spot and black spots. The black spots could be due to flea dirt, and scratching the area could cause the bald spot. Fleas don't live on the cat, they actually live in the environment. They just jump on the cat to feed and then jump off, so he could have fleas even if you don't see any. Make sure he is up to date on his flea treatments if he's not. Should he be up to date on his flea treatments, then this could be due to an injury (the black spots could be dirt), or an infection of the skin. In this case, you have two options. You could take him into the vet to get it examined and diagnosed, or you could watch it. Should you chose to watch it, take him into the vet if it gets bigger, appears infected, or starts to bother him. I don't think any immediate treatment is needed should you chose to watch the area. My red point colorpoint mix is getting odd grey splotches. He's a young cat, and their on his back and neck. He also acts fine.
It’s difficult to say without doing an exam but these could be normal hair pigment changes. This sometimes will happens as a cat ages. I would also be concerned that something may be going on with the skin. I would make sure that it is just the hair that is discolored and the skin in that area look normal. I would be looking for an scabs, discoloration or redness of the skin and whether she is licking or bothered by those areas. If you are not sure, I would have your vet take a peak to ensure it looks normal. Your vet will be able to start her on the proper meds if needed. I hope this helps!
