My dog is shedding heavily and has thinning hair. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 55 lbs

Spooky has leishmaniasis and takes allopurinol every day. He was treated with milteforan around 7 months ago. He's shedding a lot but doesn't have other symptoms (fever, diarrhea, etc) and doesn't seem to have any bald spots, aside from some thinning under his front paws (armpits?) and I think the same place on the back paws. He doesn't have scabs or dry skin there. Should I be worried or is it seasonal shedding? It's very hard to take him to the vet now because of the quarentine

Hello. Let's give this the benefit of the doubt that this is just some shedding. The important thing is that there are no obvious skin lesions, so see how things go over the next several weeks. By then, maybe this virus will be on its way out & you can easily have Spooky evaluated by your veterinarian. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
